ABOUT THE HOST
Bio: Rich Stevens is a retired engineer who has been looking for better mowing equipment for decades. Denied the opportunity to have a radio controlled car when he was young he has been recapturing his youth by buying a radio controlled mower. It is just as much fun as he thought the car would be, but with the added adventure of mowing down everything in its path. If his wife asks it's all about safety and keeping a well groomed property, but you deserve to know the truth.
When and why did you choose AHM?
After reviewing remote controlled slope mowers I chose AHM's X120 because of it's unique features in a low-cost mower. I want to mow tall weeds a few times per year. Since rotary mowers can leave long debris that breaks down slowly I was looking for a flail mower that would mulch the material thoroughly. There aren't many flail mowers in the remote control market, and the ones that are there have mowing heads inside the tracks, which means the tracks will flatten material before mowing it. The X120 head covers the tracks so all material is cut before the tracks roll over it. The only other machines capable of this are 4 – 10 times the AHM X120 cost.
How was your experience with AHM in all areas?
They keep me informed of status and have over-delivered for the few times I have needed to contact them. The order arrived two weeks earlier than the shipping estimate and I was kept informed of the shipping status along the way. After my third use of the mower I hit a piece of buried metal which broke one of the flail blades. When I asked about how to get a replacement then sent a new one out free of charge. I was kept informed of the shipping and arrived when promised.
What impact have our machines had on you or your business?
I was looking for a personal-use mower that I could use to safely mow some steep slopes on my property with a possibility of setting up a business to do occasional mowing for others with slopes or overgrown lots. It does the job on my slopes perfectly and is more fun than I have ever had mowing. I may offer my services next summer, but if I don't it's not because of the mower.
What was the learning process like with our machines?
The remote control is easy to use. It looks complicated, but it only has three functional controls: forward/reverse, left/right, fast/slow. It's obvious when to use the first two, but I think I have room to learn on the fast slow. The steering in fast speed is very abrupt so if you try to make an adjustment while mowing a straight line a small tweak can turn into a 30 degree turn very quickly. I have been experimenting with flipping to slow to make adjustments then back to fast to mow quickly.
How comfortable are you now with our machines?
I have used it a dozen times to mow my longest and steepest slopes, as well as around my beehives which are on level ground. I am comfortable with the operation and understand the limitations and quirks reasonably well. It is not a complicated machine and I think I can easily help others understand the pros and cons of this machine for their needs.
